What is Physical Education? - week 1
Students will develop their understanding of what constitutes basic physical fitness (heart and lung/cardiovascular endurance, strength and flexibility) and realise that fitness is not just a component of the sporting world but is also an important component of every individual’s health and wellbeing.

Feeling the Effects! - week 2
Students will perform physical activities at varying intensities to feel the effects on their heart rate, breathing and any other changes to their body, including sweating and increases in body temperature.

First Healthy Eating Habit! - week 3
Students record the food they have eaten over the past 24 hours and compare their diet with the federal government recommendation: consume seven standard serves of fruit and vegetables (five servings of vegetables and two of fruit) every day.

Mastering Skills - week 4
Fundamental Motor Skills are the building blocks of sports and physical activity. Students will be devising activities that develop basic Fundamental Motor Skills. They will then use the activities as stations for a tabloid sports carnival.

Modified Sports - week 5
Students will be playing an invasion game. The focus will be practising specific fundamental motor skills needed to play the chosen game. At the completion of the game students will be asked to create some modifications to the playing rules.

Getting Active! - week 6
Students will be encouraged to think about and analyse how they spend their leisure time on a daily basis. Strategies for increasing physical activity during leisure will be discussed and explored to encourage students to be more generally active while at leisure.

Sugar, Glucose, Fructose... - week 7
Students will bring sample packets of processed foods to analyse the sugar content and become more aware of all the different types of sugars and their names used in processed foods. Students will ascertain if these foods should be consumed regularly, occasionally or almost not at all and hopefully learn to make healthier choices for their daily food intake.

In the Neighbourhood - week 8
Students will improve their knowledge of the parks, sports fields, centres and recreation facilities in their local area, using the website www.whereis.com.au and/or Street Directories. Posters will be made with the names of the various facilities and venues for students to record their visit and what they did there.

Dance Attack - week 9
Students will identify and experience the effect of moderate intensity physical activity on the body including changes to their breathing, heart rate and body temperature. They will take their pulse rate at the beginning of the session, then again during the Dance activity to identify whether they are working at a moderate intensity level.

Relay Challenge - week 10
Students will participate in short bouts of vigorous intensity physical activity and describe the effects on the body including changes to their breathing, heart rate and body temperature. Students will discuss how vigorous intensity activity helps to improve cardiovascular endurance and why vigorous intensity activity can only be maintained for a short period of time. Students will also identify and create a vigorous intensity activity they could undertake.

Keep It Moving Circuit - week 11
Students participate in a muscular endurance circuit to identify and discuss the various
muscle groups involved within the activities. Students use this knowledge to assist them in
identifying the muscle groups requiring muscular endurance for sports and activities they are
involved in.

Fun Fit Yoga! - week 12
Students execute yoga poses that provide the joints and muscles of the legs and pelvic region, the spine and upper body with a greater range of movement. These poses enhance muscle flexibility and joint mobility. Students will discuss what flexibility is and why it is important. They will also explore how they can improve their own flexibility through stretching and by participating in yoga-style activities. These aim to encourage muscle flexibility and assist in a greater freedom in the joints, facilitating a smooth functioning through a full range of motion. Students will also identify the correct way to execute each yoga pose and then complete the student worksheet.

Eat Like an Athlete - week 13
Students identify the requirements of a balanced diet for themselves and for the
needs of an athlete.

Wonderful Water - week 14
Students will explore the importance of hydration and the amount of fluid they require each day. They will also identify and examine the different types of drinks available to them and what are the best choices to consume for good health.

Healthy Plate - week 15
Students will explore the nutritional benefits of fruits and vegetables, including the scientific names of the nutrients and their roles in the body. They will design and create a plate full of healthy fruit and vegetables, be able to identify the nutrients in their choice of food, and explain the nutrients and their role in promoting good health..

Snack Attack - week 16
Students will be able to develop an understanding of the energy level in snack foods and the amount of activity required to metabolise that energy. They will also be able to examine food intake and make healthier choices.
