Teachers - Curriculum Resources

The 1Seven curriculum resources have been developed for use across Australia to support the 1Seven message of 'Move More, Eat Well'. These resources are freely available on the 1Seven website .

We hope that teachers will welcome this innovative and stimulating curriculum with enthusiasm as it provides a relevant framework for introducing the benefits of physical activity and guiding students toward developing healthy habits.

Why

The 1Seven partners (Australian Football League, Netball Australia and Medibank Private) are committed to improving and supporting the health and wellbeing of Australia’s children.

Schools are vital in communicating the health message. They are the perfect setting to educate and inform children on health and wellbeing issues, enhance health literacy and competency, and channel information to families and the broader community. The contribution made by teachers promoting a good health message is immeasurable.

What

There are four sets of 1Seven curriculum (release dates are noted below):

  • Early Primary Years (Prep/Reception/Kindergarten)
  • Lower primary Years (Year 1 & 2)
  • Middle Primary Years (Year 3 & 4)
  • Upper Primary Years (Year 5 & 6)

As each state and territory has a different way of labelling the primary school years, the terms above were devised as overarching labels within the 1Seven program. The 1Seven curriculum is based on a seven-year primary model.

Each set of curriculum includes eight lessons and provides teachers and schools with background information, discussion points and a series of learning tasks.

Each lesson includes mapping and links to state and territory curriculum frameworks, highlighting the specific focus of each lesson according to KLA and Essential Learning Achievements. From the lessons, resources and links each teacher can create the curriculum that suits the needs, abilities and interests of students within their specific environment, the resources which are available and other curriculum commitments.

In particular, the student sheets can be used in the manner each teacher feels is most appropriate for their students. They may like to photocopy these for students, write the tasks up on cards or copy them in order to cut and integrate them with other activities.

Each lesson refers to suggested readings from the 1Seven website. The readings are a mix of background information for teachers and children-specific articles. Articles contained within the Teachers' section of the website aim to provide fresh ideas for discussion and debate within school communities about the best ways to improve student understanding of the essentials for good health and physical activity. Articles in the Kids’ section of the website can be read in class or printed and given to children to take home and share and read with their parents and/or carers.

How

The curriculum aims to:

  • support the 1Seven message of Move More, Eat Well;
  • engage children, their teachers, parents and the broader community in creating positive life-long habits for a healthy existence;
  • support state and territory curriculum requirements;
  • provide activities and experiences that offer enquiry-based learning opportunities;
  • expose students to a variety of hands-on, interactive, open-ended and fun experiences; and
  • encourage and promote healthy food choices and greater physical activity.

Lessons are based on student-centred learning, endeavouring to engage young people in decision making and problem solving. They encourage children to plan, act and reflect.

The lessons explore ways of promoting and maintaining good health and consider how different people meet their health needs.

The lessons can assist children in developing knowledge, skills and strategies to achieve and enjoy an active and healthy life.

The suggested physical activities provide a medium for learning and skill development – and can help students develop fundamental movement skills and body and spatial awareness.

We hope you find the 1Seven resources fun, practical, useful and easy to use! Any feedback about these resources would be appreciated by emailing your comments to 1Seven@afl.com.au
